Lung Training: Mucus Clearance and Improving Lung Function
Treatment for Increased Mucus Production
Increased mucus production can build up over time and block the airways. The accumulation of mucus in the airways then becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to lung infections such as pneumonia.
Airway clearance is a crucial part of lung treatment, as it can help improve breathing and reduce the risk of lung infections. Many of our patients experience increased mucus production because they are unable to cough and expel the mucus effectively. We can assist them with manual chest physiotherapy.
Manual chest physiotherapy can be performed either manually, using chest percussion and vibration. It involves clapping on the chest and/or using vibrations to help loosen thick secretions.
Often associated with chest physiotherapy, postural drainage is a technique that utilizes gravity to aid in the removal of secretions from the airways. There are at least 12 different positions in which postural drainage is performed, depending on which area of the lung you are focusing on.
